What is Mitigation

After a loss from water, fire, smoke or mold damage, folks want immediate movement to rid themselves of any adverse recollection of all damages. Mitigation is the starting point to rebuild lives and property.

Mitigation encompasses the clearing or removing of all damaged material whether it is water damaged drywall, fire charred ceilings and framing or smoke damaged furniture and even mold infested walls or flooring. The removal of all damaged or affected materials may also include mudslides and the removal of all soaked materials or businesses and storefronts that have automobile damage or vandalism, each situation is unique.

Mitigation of affected personal or business materials could include furniture, books, personal belongings, appliances, broken windows, flooring, and any and all affected items that need removal. All costs of removal and replacement are typically paid by insurance carriers, in which insurance adjusters can address individually.

Stopping Further Damage

The primary focus of mitigation is stopping any further damage from spreading or affecting areas that were not impacted by the initial damage. For example, mold affected walls or flooring would need to be removed with attention to health and safety. Our IICRC certified technicians have experience in the removal of not only the infected walls and flooring, but also utilizing the latest microbial retardants and applying them safely before any further rebuilding work can proceed. This ensures that all steps will be taken to stop further mold growth, but also give the peace of mind to the property owner that the newly rebuilt property will not have the same issue going forward.

During the mitigation process, items that can be salvaged will be salvaged. Whether it's a personal effect or a much needed accessory necessary to be saved, all salvageable items will be rescued within reason. Often customers will work with our teams to request items to be saved for restoration or archival purposes. Ultimately, many items can be cleaned and fully restored, even if they're fully soaked documents and books or rich with historical values like vintage tiles or paintings. Most insurance companies will pay the full restoration costs to save various extremely valuable items. Inquire with Vanguard's team members for more details.
